5 Real-World Self-Defense Skills Every Woman Should Know

Not theory. Not movie moves. Skills that actually protect you when it matters.

Learning self-defense skills isn't about being fearless — it's about being prepared. And preparation means learning practical skills that hold up when the pressure is real. At Yesuway School of Martial Arts, our women's self-defense program is built around exactly that: techniques grounded in real-world scenarios, taught in a safe and empowering environment.

Here are five foundational skills we believe every woman should have in her toolkit:

  1. Know how to punch — and make a proper fist

It sounds basic, but most people have never actually been taught to punch correctly. A poorly formed fist can injure you more than your attacker. We teach proper technique from the ground up so that if you ever need to use your hands, you're doing it right.

  1. Know how to slip, roll, and pivot

Defense is just as important as offense — maybe more so. Knowing how to get out of the way of a punch (slipping, rolling, pivoting) keeps you safe without requiring brute strength. These are movement skills that work for every body type.

  1. Know your fighting stance

Your stance determines everything — your balance, your reach, your ability to move. Learning what a proper fighting stance looks and feels like is one of the first things we cover, because it's the foundation every other skill is built on.

  1. Know how to defend yourself from the ground

This one is non-negotiable. If someone attacks you, there's a strong chance the situation ends up on the ground. Knowing how to protect yourself when you're on your back — and how to regain control — could be the skill that saves your life.

  1. Know how to escape a mount

If someone gets on top of you, panic is the enemy. We train students to understand what that position looks like, how to control the hips of the person trying to mount you, and how to escape — calmly and effectively. It's intense training, but it creates real confidence.

"Defending yourself while on your back — that is my most important one. That's the one every woman needs to know." — Sensei Bronzze

Self-defense is a gift you give yourself. It's not about living in fear — it's about living in confidence, knowing that whatever situation you find yourself in, you are not helpless.

At Yesuway, we believe your body is a temple worth protecting. Our women's program is a safe, encouraging space where faith and fitness meet.
